Gwen stepped forward slipping her hand into Jack's, he squeezed her hand appreciating the comforting gesture. A single tear rolled down his cheek as the minister continued to speak of Ianto Jones. The terrible accident that ended the young man’s life. He would be missed by everyone and never forgotten. The coffin was lowered gently into the ground and Jack looked around at the group, there were tears and sad smiles. Jack smiled to himself, Gwen looked up with confusion.

'You OK Jack?' Jack nodded; he was proud, proud of what Ianto Jones had achieved in his short life time. Gwen seemed to understand the look in Jack's eyes. 'He did well, Jack, he did really well.' Gwen smiled at the thought of Ianto, he died a hero.

People started to leave and wonder off into different directions, Gwen looked behind her to where Rhys stood, he nodded and taking Floyd's hand, led the little boy towards the car, 'Come on kiddo, let's go find us some ice cream, yeah?' Floyd nodded and smiled.

Gwen turned back to face Jack, 'He was a hero, Jack, never forget that, he died saving Floyd and all those other people in the tunnel.'

'I know, it's just, well, the only thing that helped me think Ianto wanting to leave Torchwood was that he would be out of danger.'

'It was something inside him, Jack. Instincts that helped him save the most important thing in his life and 47 other people.'

'Floyd doesn't have anyone now.' Jack tried to change the subject.

'That's not true and you know it! You love that kid and so do Rhys and I.'

‘what will happen to him?'

'He will come home with us.' Gwen nodded her head in the direction Rhys and Floyd had gone.

'And then what?'

'I am not letting him go into care Jack Harkness. Ianto fought hard to keep him and so will I.'

Jack smiled at Gwen's determination, she was right; Ianto did fight hard against Floyd's biological father to keep the young boy. It happened only a year after Ianto left Torchwood. Floyd was two weeks old when Ianto had met Tanya and bonded instantly with the duo. Ianto fell in love with Tanya and after a year moved them into his house. He loved Floyd like he was his own and after sixth months of living together Ianto plucked up the courage to propose. Tanya was delighted; she didn't think she would love so soon after splitting up with Floyd's father. Three years later they still hadn't got round to organising the wedding, it hadn't mattered, they were happy and that was all they could ask for.

Tanya was walking home from the corner shop when a car swerved to miss a cone and hit her. The paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene; Ianto had heard the commotion outside their house and went to see what was going on. When he saw the face of his fiancé he left the scene and went to find Floyd. He drove to the friends he met recently, Rhys and Gwen were lovely, so generous and within weeks he felt he had known them for years. He dropped Floyd off and went to the hospital. Unfortunately the process of legally adopting Floyd was harder than he thought, thankfully his other friend Jack managed to pull some strings at the court and after a hard six months he could officially call Floyd his son.

Ianto had Floyd baptised and called upon Rhys, Gwen and Jack to be god-parents; they were all thrilled to be part of Floyd and Ianto’s lives. Three years on and life was great for pair, they were a good team. One day trip took a turn for the worse; they were driving through a tunnel when it collapsed. Ianto immediately took charge of the chaos. Organising people to leave through the small gap they had created. The more people that left made the rubble become loose. Ianto was checking around to see if anyone had been left, he noticed a lady struggling with a small bundle, he ran down to help her, pushing her through the gap and passing her the baby, he lost his footing and the tunnel collapsed onto him. They managed to get him out and stable, at the hospital it seemed he was recovering well, he managed to see everyone a few times, he took a turn for the worse and died later that night. Ianto was the only fatality. He was a hero.

Gwen wiped Jack’s cheek of the tears. She fumbled about in her pockets and found a small piece of paper. ‘Ianto gave this to me at the hospital, he made me promise I would give this to you, he said he was in pain and I had to give it to you when he died. He said it included something that would help you.’ Gwen had protested but Ianto ignored her.

Jack took the folded paper and carefully opening it,

                                    ‘I will always love you.

                                                Ianto’

Jack nodded silently and dragged Gwen into a hug. Tears falling freely from both of them. Jack hadn’t realised Ianto had heard him at the hospital. Jack looked up to the sky.

‘Forever.’
